Every outlet.
One front page.
Every click to the journalist.

The news outlets of the web, in one front page. The stories most outlets are covering right now — the same for everybody, which is the point of a front page.

  • Never the body
  • Same for everybody
  • No account to read
  • Reads robots.txt first

One story

One story. Every outlet that covered it.

An article is one outlet's report. A story is the event those reports are about — a vote, a verdict, a result — with every outlet's article under it. Read it on one site and see how the others put it.

  • Made by the clusterer, never by hand. Nobody in an office decides the story of the day.
  • The front page is whatever the most outlets are writing about, right now, the same for you as for anyone.
  • Narrow it to a section or a country when you want less of it.

The click

Every click goes to the journalist.

Headline. Standfirst. Picture. Link. That's all we show. The rest is theirs — the reader clicks and lands on the outlet's page, with its ads, its paywall and its journalist's byline.

01

The headline

The outlet's own, as they wrote it. Each outlet's headline under the story, not one picked to stand for the rest.

02

The standfirst

The line under the headline that the outlet wrote to make you click. It's theirs, so it's what we show.

03

The picture

One, from the article page, so the front page looks like a front page and not a list of links.

04

The link

Through a redirect that counts one thing, the read-through, and shows it to the outlet's editor. We don't sell it, we show it.

05

The body

  • Never shown
  • Never summarised
  • Never "overviewed"
  • The click never kept
  • The read-through, counted and shown to the editor

Who's covering it

Who's covering it. And who isn't.

Under every story, a bar: how many outlets on the left, the centre and the right are covering it. Sometimes one side is missing. We mark that as a blindspot — because the story you're not being shown is the interesting one.

  • Each outlet is rated once, by Roola, for where its editorial line sits and its record on the facts. It says it's Roola's rating, every time.
  • The bar counts outlets, not articles. Unrated outlets are counted apart, never quietly filed as centre.
  • It's a rating of the outlet's line over time. Never of the piece in front of you.

For editors

Claim your outlet. Get the desk.

If you run a news site, this is the part for you. Prove you control the domain and the outlet is yours — its numbers, its settings and its switch.

Claim

Prove the domain

A meta tag, a DNS record or a file — your choice. One Roola account does it.

The dashboard

Your read-throughs

Read-throughs and articles by day, your most-read pieces, and the crawl log: exactly what our bot did, and when.

The settings

The ones an editor should have

Name, description, feed, crawl interval. And "read it now" to pull the latest without waiting.

The switch

Off News, if you want

One switch takes your outlet off News. Yours to flip. We'd rather you didn't, but it's your outlet.

The crawler

Our bot reads robots.txt first.

RoolaNewsBot says who it is, takes no for an answer, and backs off a site that's struggling. It reads an outlet's feed every half hour, and a few article pages a visit for a picture or an author.

  • A site that says no is marked disallowed, and asked again once a day in case it changes its mind.
  • A site that fails is backed off, doubling each time, up to a day. Size and time are bounded.
  • RSS, Atom or JSON Feed. A site with no feed is read from its homepage's article links.

Publishers: it's at roola.news/bot.

Your wire

Read without an account. Follow with one.

The front page is open to anyone. Sign in with Roola to follow the outlets you trust, for your own wire — and their articles arrive in your Roola feed, newest first, beside everything else you follow.

One Roola account for following and claiming. The same one that opens Politicise, Helix and the rest.

No account

Every story, every outlet that covered it, and the bar. Nothing to sign up for.
